Should I Enter a Show Near the Opening Date or the Closing Date?

If you really want to be in the show, enter on (or just after) the opening date. This makes you more likely to get into the show if it fills early so closes early.

If you are not desperate to be in the show, consider entering it on (or just before) the closing date. If the show fills early so closes early, you may not get in, but then you were not desperate to show.
